VIDEO: Jonathan Papelbon goes off on umpire
Phillies closer and Monday night’s losing pitcher Jonathan Papelbon
went on a classic 3 ½ minute rant about home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn after
the game.
Reyburn is usually a minor league umpire who was called up for work in this series, and Papelbon noted that “he should go back to Triple A.”
“If you don’t do a good job, you should be demoted or fired,” Papelbon said. “It’s just like anybody’s job. It’s like y’all’s job, or my job.”
Papelbon added that Reyburn was terrible all night. Charlie Manuel must have agreed, as he addressed some first-inning close calls when Vance Worley was pitching.
“In the first inning, he was throwing some close pitches,” Manuel said. “He had a hard time getting any of them.”
Papelbon said Reyburn’s calls “affected every at-bat in the game.”

Papelbon was particularly upset about what he thought was
the third strike to Dee Gordon, who got the ball call from Reyburn and later
tripled, leading to the winning run.
“I wanted to know if he could throw me out for what I was
thinking, and if he could, I thought he sucked. It’s that simple,” Papelbon
said.
That was just a taste of the enigmatic closer’s rambling
soliloquy about how awful he felt the home plate umpire performed.“If you don’t do a good job, you should be demoted or fired,” Papelbon said. “It’s just like anybody’s job. It’s like y’all’s job, or my job.”
